I've already mentioned that Vast was human before he died and became a Pokemon. So it'd be redundant of me to repeat the entire story (which, incidentally, is an extra in CSSN...go check it out if you're playing clueless).
So, this is human child!Vast, and his mother. Of course, Vast wasn't his name as a human; Crystal renamed him Vast. His human name...will be revealed later on in the nuzlocke. Vast, when he was alive and human, was the only child of a wealthy couple. At least...they seemed wealthy. His father was a drunk, and gambled away the family fortune whenever money came into the household. His father was a decent gambler, so they were never really without, but whenever he lost... he took his drunken anger out on both Vast and his mother. His mother did what she could to protect him, but given the time (Vast was human over 100 years ago, before the entire women's rights stuff and whatnot), she really couldn't do much. So she was a weak, frightened woman in a horrible situation from which there was no escape. She ended up sacrificing herself to save her son when Daddy pulled a gun on the boy to kill him. This act is what tipped the poor boy over the edge and lead him to kill himself. How he became a Gastly is an entirely different story, of course. It'll be revealed later as well.
Likewise, when Silphe sacrificed herself to save Tepi, Vast had that terrible flashback of his mother doing the same, which is part of the reason why he was so messed up for so long. Vast completely identifies with his daughter on brutally losing a mother. However, he's been ignoring his past for so long, he really can't bring himself to talk about it to his child or to anybody, really. Vast has issues...

GuardianOfTheFlame was the one who wanted me to draw Vast's mother. Vast takes after his mom in the looks department. Silphe also reminded Vast somewhat of his mother, and that was a key factor in his attraction to her. They had the same sort of demeanor...
